The 14-day rule: how streaks build a walking habit

Most apps celebrate day 3 and day 30. The real behaviour change happens between day 10 and 16.

Every "build a habit in 21 days" blog post quotes the same 1960s plastic-surgery study. Actual habit research points to a different number.

What we see in the data

We looked at 60-day retention of users who hit their daily step goal on day 1.

The flattening point is the "habit formed" threshold. Past day 14, retention barely drops.

Why 14, specifically

Two weeks is long enough to cover both a working week and a weekend, a rest day, a busy Monday.

Pedometeryo's streak system uses a forgiving 14-day mode by default: you can miss one day per 14-day block and the streak continues.

Pedometeryo's medal cabinet

We have streak medals at 3, 7, 14, 30, 100, 200 and 365 days — but 14 is the one we design the hardest for.
